The Public Health Crisis of Bone Health
In today's issue of Overdrive, the podcast from Rheumatology Network, we focus on bone health. In the U.S. there are about 54 million women and men, who have low bone density and are at risk of having a fracture. And, despite having access to effective treatments, most people are not being tested or treated---even high-risk patients. It's a major public health concern and a crisis in medicine, says one expert.
In the U.S. there are about 54 million women and men, who have low bone density and are at risk of having a fracture. And, despite having access to effective treatments, most people are not being tested or treated---even high risk patients. It's a major public health concern and a crisis in medicine, says Dr. Michael Lewiecki, who is a specialist in osteoporosis and bone diseases.
The thing is, there are not enough doctors here in the U.S. to screen and treat osteoporosis patients. The need is simply too great.
In today's episode of Overdrive, the Rheumatology Network podcast, Dr. Lewiecki, who serves as director of the New Mexico Clinical Research and Osteoporosis Center, tells us about Bone Health TeleECHO, an online learning and sharing platform for physicians. It's a simple concept really: specialists train primary care providers online using Zoom, Teams or any video conferencing service.
Bone Health TeleECHO is filling an important gap in medicine. And, today, Dr. Lewiecki tells us how.
